First Man-Made Genome, Synthetic Life Is Next
My simple question: Don’t any of these people go to the movies? Maybe they all need to get together and watch The Terminator, then The Matrix… back-to-back.

Man that modular robot is some wicked stuff…
and that brain control stuff too
Science fiction dreams of today become the science reality of tomorrow. Give it enough time. All those cartoons in Japan of giant mech robots being controlled by the thoughts of pilots are on the way.
Whether we use it to fight each other or explore the cosmos will be something else
I sure wouldn’t mind being rescued by that BigDog if I needed to be…
well that gave me quite the chill in the midst of my unsuspecting evening. I thought of the kind of sardonic remark Kurt Vonnegut would utter if he were to watch this. Or perhaps he did, long ago, as maybe these technologies are just being introduced into the mainstream now by design but have existed for decades.
I’d have to think that the angels have taken their sides in the battle that will come of all this. We’ll see.
Here’s a TED video of Craig Venter talking about the whole synthetic genome thing:

I felt sorry for Big Dog when that guy kicked him!
Amazing stuff Eben, but your “connect the dots” thought process does leave me with an ominous feeling!!
And I for one welcome our new rat-brained, dog-like, robotic overlords. I’d like to remind them that as a trusted internet personality, I can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their underground sugar caves.
Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe it can acheive.

“achieve” rather
Wow that’s kinda freaky the legs on it responded almost like a real animal
Big dog is my favorite. That thing is light on it’s feet!
Hilarious.
Clever enough to invent them.
Dumb enough to think it’s a good idea to kick them.
Yeah, the robots are definitely not going to have a problem with that.
I’ll take a Big Dog that’s remote controlled by my brain, and puts itself together when kicked apart…. must come with drink cooler, and beanbag. Now they just need to create some synthetic genome critters that muffle that dang sound from its engine (and of course, generate fuel for that puppy (pun intended)).
When the machines finally wake up, I hope it’s the mouse brain robot and not the Big Dog that decide what to do with us!
Here’s another video of BigDog, very funny:
Well done, Doll…you’ve put the pieces together.
If you watch “Vanilla Sky” with Tom Cruise + “The Truman Show”+ The Matrix Trilogy, you have a simplified version of “The Grid” –
We believe we are separate individuals, when in ‘reality’ we are all plugged into the Grid – or Unified Field, as Einstein called it, or the Collective Consciousness, as modern-day Gurus name it –
Our human body – electronic physical vessel allows us to operate and interact within the Grid – attached to it, we are able to access all the information in the universe, and provided that we are balanced and disciplined, we are able to exercise and act upon this knowledge, using our mind and our bodies.
Synergy is when many minds resonate with a similar idea or concept and access the Grid – their individual expression of the idea or concept makes life interesting…rather like what is happening now with the Law of Attraction and you cyber-space Gurus making Grid information available to those people who aren’t motivated enough to access it themselves…
Welcome to the Matrix…welcome to Reality!

“Everyone has to believe in something. I believe I’ll have another Martini.”
It was inevitable, but like all change, requires a mature stance to keep one’s bearings. As for me, I’m kicking and screaming. Not coming out of the basement…
I find the potential vehicle applications for the big dog robot interesting.
We don’t master and know ourself too well, but we want to master robotics and AI
Interesting post.
